Joan’s Recipe for Turkey Dinner with all the Fixin’s…

My son is visiting from Seattle to work as the sound engineer while I read THE LONER for Audible, so we’re going to celebrate Thanksgiving early. I’ve invited a few friends to join us at the table, since the more food–and friends–the merrier. My kids (and grandkids) love my mashed potatoes, which can be made ahead and warmed Thanksgiving Day.  HERE’S MY RECIPE:  8 medium Idaho potatoes, peeled and boiled. Mash with 1/2 stick of butter, 3 oz. Philadelphia Cream Cheese, and 8 oz. of sour cream. Salt to taste. Put in buttered casserole dish and dot with the other 1/2 stick of butter. Cover and store in fridge. On Thanksgiving Day, put in 350 degree oven for 30 minutes or until warm. And enjoy!

Maverick Heart Has a New Cover

I wrote Maverick Heart as a sequel to The Inheritance more than thirty yaers ago. I remember creating the first draft of the books while listening to the rousing theme song from the very first Jurassic Park. Thanks in part to such stirring music, I managed to put my characters in terrible trouble–and never let them out.

I don’t usually read my books once they’re published (I can’t resist the urge to keep editing), so I had no idea what to expect when I reread Maverick Heart for republication all these years later. What a wonderful surprise to discover civilized Englishmen, what would be called green horns, being put to the test–and surviving–the rigors of life on the frontier. Stampeding buffalo, marauding Sioux, freezing snowstorms, bucking broncs, and a rattlesnake in a young man’s bedroll–they’re all here to enjoy.
